The soda-blasting process was developed in the late 1980s by a group of New York City engineers who were given the task of restoring the Statue of Liberty.
The two primary concerns from the onset of the project were the impact on the environment and not damaging the soft copper plating on the statue. They met these concerns by developing the soda-blasting process, using sodium bi-carbonate (baking soda) as the blast media. The success of the Statue of Liberty restoration brought a lot of attention to the soda-blasting process, and soon, many commercial enterprises were discovering new applications for the process.
At AAA Eco-Blasting Company, we utilize our specialized soda-blasting technique for fiberglass, carbon fiber, aluminum, urethane and plastics. For metals, we have developed our own exclusive and unique media blend. (Soda-blasting is also used for GRAFFITI REMOVAL --- see our section devoted to this type of work.)
Soda-blasting is the latest cutting-edge technology. It is so gentle, in fact, it can remove the paint from a pop can without breaching or denting the metal! Because of its ability to be gentle, paint stripping is done without the risk of heat build-up that can warp body panels and, unlike sandblasting, it will not compromise the surface being treated.
Soda-blasting is unique in so many ways. It can even safely remove the paint from your delicate fibreglass projects. There is no etching or damage of any kind to this challenging surface. Another advantage of soda-blasting is that it acts as a rust inhibitor by leaving a protective coating on metal surfaces. When the time comes to paint the surface, the protective coating can be removed by using a solution of vinegar and water.
This fibreglass piece (below) had definitely seen better days before it arrived in our shop. Our soda-blasting specialists were soon hard at work, restoring it to virtual "straight-from-the-factory-floor" condition. BEFORE
- In addition to paint, soda-blasting is ideal for the removal of grease and baked-on carbon from internal and external engine parts (blocks, heads, running gear etc.). Amazingly, this is all done at no expense to the environment.
